Kids diving on Summer Island

Treats for tots starting mid August on Summer Island

Great news! We have upgraded our diving equipment so that kids can use our brand new 7 liter aluminum tanks! This new addition is a perfect match with our Mares Kids BCD's (XXS), which together create a "lighter" experience for the young ones.
Kids from the age of 10 years can make the NAUI Junior Scuba Diver license.
While this is great news,t is important to understand that kids must choose to make the diver course themselves and receive no outside pressure from their parents or anyone else.

Official announcement by the Ministry of Fisheries and Agriculture
Ban of all shark fishing within 12 mile radius from the outer atoll rim of Maldivian atolls

Shark species have slow growth, late maturity and low fecundity resulting in wide generation gaps and low regeneration rates in the population. These factors render sharks vulnerable to over-exploitation.
Research has shown that there is a threat to shark populations in the Maldives due to their exploitation by the fishery thus having negative impacts on the two main sectors of the Maldivian economy, fisheries and tourism.
Hence under the clause 10 of the law number 5/87 (Maldivian Fisheries Law) the Ministry of Fisheries and Agriculture has declared a ban effective from 01st of March 2009, on any fishery targeted at killing, capturing or extraction of any shark species inside and within 12 miles from the outer atoll rim of all Maldivian Atolls.

A bird cage for fish
As you guys know, we are always attempting to make the Summer Island House reef more interesting. That being said, we took the giant bird cage here on the island and put it underwater. No worries though, the birds were let loose into nature and freedom. At first suffering from skepticism, the fish warmed up to the idea of a new and interesting house and moved right on in. We are sure though that many corals will attach to this cage and will make for a very interesting underwater photo.

New attraction = new home

Remember the Noor 6 Speedboat we sank last May on our House Reef? We are very happy it has become a home for so many fish and corals already. Besides glass fish and yellow fin jacks, our domestic moray Oscar moved in!
