DIVING ON GAN (EQUATOR VILLAGE)

 

Gan Island in the Addu Atoll lies at the southern end of the Maldivian archipelago—and thus south of the equator. This atoll is the most populous region of the Maldives after the island of Male, the capital. During World War II, Gan was a British Air Force base until March 1976. Many reminders of the former British presence still remain today.

With a length of five kilometers and a width of five kilometers, Gan is the largest island in Addu Atoll. Gan is connected to other islands in the western atoll lagoon by causeways, resulting in a total island chain length of almost 20 kilometers.

The island of Gan is not a typical tourist island with small sandy beaches, but guests can move freely around the islands, with the necessary respect for the local population.
There is much to discover during a stay on Gan, not only above, but especially underwater...

Maldives Completely different:
No sign of coral bleaching – the Addu Atoll was fortunately spared from the coral bleaching in 1998. Divers expecting large coral formations in all shapes and colors will certainly not be disappointed here.

Manta rays can be spotted in Addu Atoll all year round, but sharks, turtles and schools of fish on the outer reefs and in the atoll channels also make divers' hearts beat faster.

Not far from Gan, in the interior of the atoll, lies the largest shipwreck in the Maldives, the "British Loyalty." The 143-meter-long tanker, which had already survived two submarine attacks during World War II, was sunk by the British themselves in January 1946. The ship lies on the sandy bottom at a depth of 16-33 meters, thus providing ideal conditions for wreck diving.

The Equator Village Hotel is located on Gan Island, just about one kilometer from the airport. The hotel's 78 bungalows are set in lush gardens with flowers, shrubs, and trees.
All rooms are very spacious and equipped with air conditioning, a refrigerator and showers with hot and cold water.
The hotel features an open-air restaurant, a bar, a TV room, a billiards room with an antique table, a freshwater swimming pool with a poolside bar, and a tennis court. Bicycles can also be rented from the hotel for exploring.
